Before you print

Use your guest network, not your main one

Anyone who photographs the code has your password permanently. On a guest network that only costs you bandwidth. On your main network it exposes everything else connected to it.

Get the security type right

Picking WPA when the network is open, or the reverse, produces a code that fails silently — the phone tries to connect and gives up with no useful error. Most modern networks are WPA/WPA2.

Hidden networks need the flag set

If your SSID is not broadcast, the code must say so, or scanning finds nothing to join.

Does a Wi-Fi QR code work on both iPhone and Android?

Yes. iOS has supported Wi-Fi QR codes in the camera app since iOS 11, and Android since version 10. Both join the network directly from the standard camera — no separate scanning app is needed.

Can someone see my Wi-Fi password from the QR code?

Yes. The password is stored in the code itself, so anyone who scans or photographs it can read it with a decoder. Use a guest network for any code you display publicly.

Do I need to reprint the code if I change my password?

Yes. A Wi-Fi QR code is static — the password is encoded in the image. Changing the password means generating and printing a new code.
