Museums & galleries
QR codes for museums and galleries
Extended captions, audio guides and translations without adding a single word to the wall.
Where it helps
Extended captions
Wall labels have to stay short. A code gives the people who want the full story somewhere to find it.
Audio guides
A code beside each piece removes the handset, the deposit and the queue.
Translations
One code offering the same caption in several languages, without four printed labels per exhibit.

Questions
- What if there is no signal in the building?
- This is the main practical problem in galleries, especially in basements and stone buildings. Either provide visitor wifi, or use text codes that carry the content itself and need no connection.
- Do QR codes look out of place next to artwork?
- They can. Keep them small, print them in a tone that suits the label design, and place them consistently so people learn where to look.
